LGBTI and Dementia: Understanding Changes in Behaviour

For many LGBT older people, their life experience as an LGBT person is important to them and a big part of who they are. It is often overlooked when they get diagnosed with dementia.

The Silver Rainbow program aims to improve the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people as they age and enter the Australian aged care system.

The Silver Rainbow program has produced the following resources provide guidance for aged care workers on how to support LGBT people with dementia.

This factsheet is designed for aged care workers caring for LGBT people living with dementia. It highlights the unique challenges faced by those whose memory loss may affect their ability to maintain privacy or identity, and outlines strategies to ensure dignity, respect and inclusion in care practices.
